Reproductive Physiology - LH

Updated: Nov 15, 2021

I cried this morning. Work is quite overwhelming. My colleague messaged me this morning to tell me her surgery cancelled, so I could stay home and relax, then come in for 1pm. I ended up vacuuming and cleaning the toilet, things that I didn’t get a chance to do on the weekend because I wasn’t home. Today, I cried because I was thinking about how work is overwhelming. We recently transitioned to a new software system for our digital radiology. But, no one was assigned to have it set up. We can still use the x-ray machine, but we can’t back it up to the server, which means I can’t access it on any other computer. This means I can’t do my radiology report, which also means, I’m behind on my medical records, again.

We have a part-time medical director and a part-time interim hospital manager because our hospital manager is on mat leave now. So it got left on my plate, because I’m the one who complained that it wasn’t set up. We lost our full time technician, so now we just have people covering, which helps for the day-to-day activities, but these things like the radiology computer, aren’t being done.

Anyway, I was going to write about another personal problem. That was stress and the physiology of reproduction. If you’re female, you’ll understand that having mid-cycle bleeding that looks like a period is not normal. If you’re taken any reproductive physiology, you will know that LH or luteinizing hormone has pulsatility and then an LH surge that induces ovulation through a feedback mechanism from the ovaries to the brain. In that case, you get a peak in LH that lasts maybe 12 to 24 hours, then it goes back to baseline, due to suppression from progesterone produces by the corpus luteum - the structure in the ovary that grows after ovulation and is responsible for the early maintenance of pregnancy while the placenta grows.

So, why is my LH now consistently high???

I haven’t found the answer to these questions. Likely I have low progesterone, and something is wrong with the signal to turn it off. It’s the first time i’m monitoring daily LH to monitor more ovulation. The cycle was normal after my usual period.

I just can’t time my next period with this mess! My doctor’s instructions were bloodwork at day 5 of my cycle, and ultrasound between day 5-11. But I have no idea when my next period will be (day one is the start of your period).

The only thing I can currently attribute the changes to are stress.

I have my second acupuncture visit tomorrow, so I’ll discuss it with her and keep you posted!
